Community

What comes to mind when you hear the word “community”? I immediately imagine people, words, energy. In a recent application process I was posed the question, “What does being part of a creative community mean to you?” In my response, I dove into four aspects that are particularly meaningful to me.

Community means connection. It includes supporting other artists in their ventures and projects as well as uplifting others in word and action. It means affirming art in others and accepting the challenges they bring. It means reaching out to others (instead of isolating).

Community means communication. It’s a two lane street (or a multi-lane highway!) To promote community, I believe it’s essential to share ideas, being open to honest critique and feedback. It means not only expressing thoughts from your unique perspective but also receiving varying viewpoints. Community is a safe place that promotes authenticity, where questions are asked freely with a sense of acceptance.

Community means commitment. It means showing up consistently and following through with a vision or responsibility. It means bringing a genuine passion and energy to interactions and meetings.

Community means contribution. It means giving and taking within the ebb and flow of your gifts, time, and talent. It means using your creativity to enhance the betterment of the whole group.

What does community mean to you? Use these questions as a springboard for action!

Connection: What is one way that you connect with others through community?

Communication: How have you used communication to promote growth of others and yourself?

Commitment: When and how have you shown up for your community?

Contribution: What have you recently given out of your resources?
