One subject, countless ways

At the beginning of each year I take some time for reflection… What goals did I meet? Where did I fall short? What opportunities did I seek and which ones came to me? Where did I say “Yes” or “No” or “Not yet”? What has been working? What is lacking?

In the answers to those questions I settled on a theme: Consistency. While I share images almost every day through the Instagram/Facebook social media platform I would sometimes go a week without picking up my camera. While that pattern is not inherently bad, I found it was impacting my progress as an artist. As an athlete I’ve found significant benefit in maintaining consistency in my workouts with very few exceptions (being bed-bound with illness is perhaps the only one!) Through daily workouts and movement and mobility habits I’ve developed strength, endurance, and well being. 2026 is the year for me to flex my creative muscles on the regular. So I made a commitment to capture a photograph every day. I have no expectations that every day I’ll create a masterpiece or even a photograph that’s sharable. Images are created in fraction of seconds so I certainly have the time. The discipline of observation, appreciation, and expanding how I envision the world around me has already stretched, challenged, and grown my art.

A week ago, on a whim, I purchased a bouquet of tulips. I found myself looking to them as the subject of my daily images. Regardless if the sun made an appearance, the time of day, or environment, I utilized different lenses and techniques to study and capture them uniquely. Here are some of the results of the beginnings of my New Year’s consistency project.

What can you do every day that will enhance your life or your art? How can you see and capture the same subject in novel ways?
